We’ve moved!

Google’s Feedburner service, which delivered updates to the site without having to visit it, was discontinued. Because of these changes, which were announced last year, I moved the blog to Substack.

You can visit our new site by going here: www.paroladelgiorno.com or paroladelgiorno.substack.com.

Why did you move to Substack?

Substack offers opportunities for monetizing our content. Web sites are expensive to maintain and produce. We also plan to offer additional products and content in the future, and being able to ask a small monthly/annual fee is easier to do through Substack than through the previous set up. In the past, we asked users to make donations to our site to support our efforts, but monetizing through Substack is easier both logistically and for tax purposes, as well.

Also, I discovered that several web sites were stealing and repurposing our content and audio recordings. The content on our site can be used for personal purposes in learning Italian, but they may not be repackaged and resold to help others earn a profit off of our work. Once I discovered that our recordings and intellectual property were being appropriated, it not longer made sense to continue to maintain the site without additional security.

Do I have to pay now?

You can become a free subscriber. Currently, most of the daily words are free. The only pay content is some of our more specialized grammar, language, travel, and literary content.

There are two subscription tiers:

  1. $5/month – this is a month-to-month subscription
  2. $30/year – a 50% discount off the month-to-month subscription.

Again, paid subscriptions are not required to access content as there is a healthy mixture of free content (90%) and paid content (10%).

How frequent do you/will you post?

Time permitting, the Substack will update several times per week, sometimes every day of the week while on other weeks less frequently. I am quite busy teaching, consulting, traveling, researching, and working and do not consistently have the same amount of time for the site each week.

Piccole Guide Subscription

Piccole Guide is a subscription offered by our site. We’ve published 4 out of 6 language guides. Two more are in production. If you’ve purchased subscriptions in the past, you will be notified via our storefront on Selz (where you purchased the subscription). I hope to have these last two volumes completed by the end of this summer!

Don’t forget about us on Substack!

Ciao a tutti!

Several months ago we announced the transfer of our site to Substack!

We have a nice community of Italian language learners who have signed up, but we want to grow our audience. We had to make the move as Feedburner, the site manages the email subscriptions, is being shut down early next month (August 2021). No new updates will be come from paroladelgiorno.com. Substack will help us to maintain our connection to our audience and grow the site.

Moving to Substack

Good evening, PdG’ers!

Several weeks ago I reached out to let everyone know that I would be porting the site to Substack. There will be free and paid content, and there’s no obligation to pay. A lot of content will be free (like most of our word of the day posts), but there will be occasional posts that will be restricted to paying members.

Feedburner will no longer be in operation, and Substack offers the ability to communicate with a subscriber base without having to pay. It also offers an inexpensive environment in which to maintain the site, its editor is simple and easy to use, and I can interact with free and paid subscribers more easily through email and through mobile devices.

Over the course of the next year, I will shift most of the content on Parola del Giorno to Substack and transition this web site for our publishing activities. I hope that you will join as a free or paid subscriber and continue to follow us! Because of spam privacy laws and other privacy regulations in the US and EU, I can’t simply add your email address to Substack. If you wish to subscribe, please do so by following the instructions below.

To keep things simple and safe, if you wish to continue to follow Parola del Giorno, please go on over and subscribe to our Substack newsletter.

To do so, please go here: https://paroladelgiorno.substack.com

After you click https://paroladelgiorno.substack.com, you’ll see this page:

Type in your email address and click “Subscribe.” After you do so, this box will appear:

You’ll then be presented with four ways to subscribe:

Annual: $30/year – Those that subscribe with this option will receive a free copy of our language guides in ebook format (as a PDF) in addition to access to all newsletters/posts that we publish.

Founding Member: $50/year – A special status; those that subscribe in this manner will receive a paperback copy of our language guide on Prepositions and a paperback copy of our exercise supplement (both in full color). Will also receive complete and full access to past, current, and future newsletters.

Monthly: $5/month – Complete access to past, current, and future posts. After subscribing for 12-consecutive months, all monthly subscribers will receive a free copy of one of our language guides as an ebook (pdf).

Free: Users who subscribe for free will receive all public posts that are published to the site. I plan on having a healthy mix of free and premium content.

Simply choose the level of membership support that works best for you.

After you subscribe, you’ll receive an email from Substack asking you to confirm your email address. This is common so that people are not subjected to unwanted emails. After that, you’ll receive all future newsletters. If you’ve paid the monthly, founding, or annual membership, you will receive access to the archives on Substack, as well.

Because Feedburner is going away, I plan to migrate much of the content on www.paroladelgiorno.com to Substack. Also, at some point in the near future, Feedburner will be taken offline by Google. Please consider joining Substack and remain a part of our Italian language learning community!

Substack – some clarifications

Good evening, PdG’ers!

A few followers to the site reached out on what they needed to do to keep receiving emails. I apologize if my previous email was unclear.

Because of spam and email privacy laws, I can’t transfer subscriptions from Feedburner to Substack as doing so might violate laws in the state where I live (NY) or where you live (and that is a lot of different places).

We’re back…!

Good day, all!

I don’t know about all of you, but COVID-19 has complicated my life in so many ways. As an educator and adjunct professor in higher education, my teaching and research duties began to consume all of my time as teaching online and in-person in some cases became more arduous. I haven’t been able to find the time to work on developing #PdG and for that I apologize.

I plan to graduate this summer and complete my PhD. As I work on the last sections of my dissertation, I have been exploring new ways to reach an audience as well as generate income for the site so that it at least pays for itself. More importantly, I miss engaging with my Italian friends and Italophiles.

With that in mind. I am going to be transitioning PdG to Substack over the next year.

https://paroladelgiorno.substack.com

Substack is a platform for independent writers (I also plan to develop a channel for my research and public scholarship on foreign policy and politics). Writers can make some of their posts free or they can place them behind a subscription service. I plan to do a mix of both to support PdG. I want to move away from Facebook, where it is impossible and difficult for authors to monetize their content. I also want to move away from an environment that relies too much on advertising, which can be insidious as social media sites track and store user information.

Please consider subscribing as a free member, monthly subscriber, or a founding member. There will be plenty of content for all subscription types.

Another reason for the shift to Substack is that Google plans to discontinue the Feedburner service that powers the emails that get sent to everyone daily/weekly (or however often I publish). I want to find a platform that is not only reliable but user friendly, and I think Substack is a great substitute for that. At some point in the next couple of months, email updates from www.paroladelgiorno.com will cease.

This site – www.paroladelgiorno.com – is not going away; I plan to publish free content from Substack here. I will also be migrating old content from www.paroladelgiorno.com to my Substack over the next year.

Also, I have two new language guides coming out this summer, which will complete the Piccole Guide series I started several years ago! The first one I will publish will be a guide on pronouns; the last guide in the series will be on using the past tenses in Italian (passato prossimo, imperfetto, and more!).

My goal is to return to Italy later this year or next summer (2022) to visit some of my favorite cities and some new ones to update my photo gallery so I can publish a new calendar. I am also working on developing a “Word of the Day” calendar in Italian, which I hope to release in 2022 (it’s possible it might go out in 2021, but it depends on the pandemic and other factors).
